Australian Meat Pie
This is a great recipe for Australian Meat Pie. It has the taste of the early meat pie, before they started adding soy and all the other mystery ingredients.
2 tablespoons dripping, lard, or oil
1 onion, finely chopped
500g minced beef
2 tablespoons plain flour
2 tablespoons tomato sauce
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 cup stock
½ cup parsley, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
Puff pastry makes a good pie but you can use shortcrust pastry if you wish. Or a combination of shortcrust pastry for the base and puff pastry for the top.
If you don’t want to use the pastry recipes that we provide, frozen pastry works just as well.
Heat the lard, dripping, or oil in a pan and fry the onion until soft. Add the beef, and cook until browned. Sprinkle the beef with flour and cook for a minute, then add the sauces and the stock. Simmer for about 10 minutes stirring now and then so the mixture doesn’t stick. Add parsley and seasoning and remove from heat. Allow to cool completely. You can make either one family pie with this recipe or smaller pies of whichever size you wish.
Bake at 180C for about 30 minutes or until top of pie is golden brown.
